INDIANAPOLIS (November 1, 2017) TagStation, LLC today announced the expansion of the NextRadio app into South Korea, allowing listeners to tune to all their favorite live, local FM radio stations via the FM radio chip in their smartphones. Using the FM radio chip through NextRadio will allow listeners to use 3 times less battery and 20 times less data than streaming radio apps. The FM radio chip in smartphones also gives listeners access to FM radio programming even if cellular towers go down, allowing for the timely delivery of critical emergency messages.

We recognize how ingrained smartphone usage is in South Korea, with even higher adoption rates than in the U.S. We look forward to introducing to Koreas mobile-first consumers the benefits of FM radio chip-enabled smartphones and the NextRadio brand. Developing a solid footprint in South Korea will help to strengthen our relationship with leading smartphone device makers, like LG, and forge new relationships as we collaborate with more smartphone makers to unlock the FM radio chip in their devices, says Paul Brenner, President of TagStation, the power behind NextRadio.

TagStation has previously focused expansion of the NextRadio app in North America and Latin America, making South Korea its first active country outside of the Americas. South Korea has some of the highest smartphone penetration globally, with over 71% of the population using a smartphone at least once a month. Such high smartphone usage reinforces the urgent need for more mobile device makers to unlock the FM radio chip in smartphones so that users can receive emergency radio broadcasts which can be a lifeline in a time of need.

Brenner also said, South Korean broadcasters have a strong history of commitment to the radio industry in Korea and are longstanding allies of the U.S. National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). We see expansion in South Korea as a logical next step because robust local radio broadcaster support plays a key role in NextRadios success.

Another key motivator behind TagStations choice to expand to South Korea is the presence of the worlds leading global handset makers. The new proximity to some of the most popular smartphone makers in the world will be a strategic advantage and creates a great opportunity for NextRadio to grow the FM-enabled smartphone user base internationally.
